Boost Memory and Concentration
Let’s imagine for a moment that
you are sitting by a quiet stream in the countryside. You take in the
bright sunshine and the fresh air. All of a sudden, right in front of
you, a big fish jumps out of the water and splashes down. It swims away
furiously as droplets of water run down your face. You hear the wind as
it howls through the trees, the rustling leaves, perhaps a gurgling
stream as it brushes against the rocks. The wind gently carries the
smell of freshly cut grass. As you walk along the bank, you savour the
fresh delight of some of the juicy, sweet berries that you have just
picked. You taste the tangy juice as it drips down your throat.
Whether we are walking in a quiet
country road or in a busy shopping mall, whether it is during the
workday or while we are on a holiday, we take it for granted that we
know what our surrounding is like. Our senses connect us to the world
around us. Our senses help us perceive things that can bring to us a
whole range of feelings, from intense happiness to sadness. But
sometimes the information from our senses can be misleading, or we are
too overloaded to interpret it. However, did you know that only a
fraction of the information, or sensory stimuli, received by our
sensory organs (eyes, nose, ears, skin, mouth) enters our
consciousness? In fact, our brains have several filters that prevent us
from being overwhelmed by the constant bombardment of new stimuli. By
filtering out new information, we can concentrate our attention on the
things that are important and thus keep the world in perspective.
Have you ever had the frustrating
experience that your expensive state-of-the-art digital camera will not
focus on the person in the tiny screen but on some unimportant object
in the background? Fortunately, this cannot happen to us, for our
brains are far more intelligent than the microchips and computers that
run our camera. The brain automatically separates important things from
what is secondary or irrelevant. In effect, our brain knows that you
are more interested in taking a photo of your grandmother, uncle, aunt
or child standing in front of the tree rather than the tree itself.
Likewise, an “aware” state of mind
helps you to focus on what is important and what is “background noise”.
For example, how many times have you ignored what a spouse or a family
member is saying because you were too focused on something on
television. How many times have you walked into a room and not know why
you entered the room? Or how many times have you gone to the store and
returned home and forgot a grocery item that was running out? Sometimes
our filtering mechanism fail us but we can overcome this by practicing
“mindful awareness” of what is important. We can train our minds to
focus on the task at hand.
Here are some tips to improve your memory and train your brain. So the next time
you need to go into a room to get a pen, think of a large spot of ink
on your favorite shirt pocket.
The next time someone interrupts
you while you are giving a presentation, make a mental picture of where
you stopped. If you run out of milk and need to run to the store,
imagine a cow with a apron telling you to get the milk, instead of
coming home with a pack of frozen pizzas that was discounted. Remember,
it’s all about ‘mindfulness’. Try it!

Food To Combat High
Cholesterol
Bad
cholesterol nestles
stubbornly in the body. This common fact causes great amount of
effort to afflicted ones. If only cholesterol can be passed out
or rinsed easily with water, then the fear accompanying its effects
will not be gruesome to prepare about. The sad thing about bad
cholesterol is its presence in the minute-diameter of the veins,
where
the life-giving flow of blood must not be trafficked even for a second.
Don't take it wrong. The
presence of good cholesterol is an important ingredient in our vital
processes. It is the bad cholesterol, which has to be prevented
from clogging the arteries. Usually it takes years of careless
consumption of high cholesterol foods to find out one day it is too
late to eliminate the disadvantage.
Cholesterol and weight gain go
together, the main reason why obese or simple overweight people are
prone to having high cholesterol
levels. The main factors
affecting the levels are some drugs, hereditary traits and food
diet. This is the reason why there are normally weighing
individuals who get surprised knowing their levels are high.
Usually there is less
information about preventing cholesterol from rising and the only time
they learn is when they get assessed clinically. It means one
cannot simply trust personal diagnosis in claiming safety on future
dilemmas with cholesterol.
Keeping a healthy lifestyle is
a must in preventing health troubles in the first place. While
this is commonly said everywhere, the most practical precaution to be
watched over is the food consumption. Avoid fats.
In the meantime, there are food
groups that are helpful in lowering
cholesterol levels. It means
foods with antioxidants help prevent the accumulation of bad
cholesterol.
Here are some of these helpful
foods to consider:
OATMEAL
and other FIBERS - Oatmeal is a nutritious fiber with the
reputation for its capability to reduce cholesterol. This benefit
became an important issue based on expert's studies sometime in 1980's
until 1989. This eventually lost popularity and became another
issue again in 1997 after the Food and Drug Administration declared how
it can prevent heart disease if regularly taken with the practice of
good diet low in fat. Other than oatmeal, fibers of the
same kind such as bran, wheat, brewer's yeast, breads, rice, beans,
legumes and other cereals help boost and improve the level of good
cholesterol.
VEGETABLES
AND FRUITS - vitamin rich and full of anti-oxidants, fruits and
vegetables rank highest in the food pyramid group. Human beings
are required to eat more of this than any other kinds of edible foods,
especially processed ones. These have cleansing properties and do
not contain a single fat, particularly citrus fruits rich in vitamin
C. Cucumber, rich in vitamin E, is one of the best anti-oxidants
good for fighting free-radical elements causing different kinds of
disease and discomforts in the body.
FISH
- tuna and other fish with white meat are good choices for healthy
diet. Fish is low in saturated fat.
SELECTED
LEAN MEATS - chicken and turkey without the skin, liver, extra
lean beef. Without the fat, these protein rich foods are
important part of low cholesterol diet.
YOGURT
- very good in the regulating the acids in the stomach which is a good
way to balance the digestion of food. Yogurt is healthy in
regulating cholesterol levels because of this quality, while at the
same time it is low in fat.

Composting
Many people who maintain
gardens have a large amount of organic
waste, from grass clippings to leaves and dead plants.
Unfortunately, many waste money and time having these wastes
transported to a landfill. It isn’t just a waste of good compost; it’s
a waste of everything that goes into the process of transporting it
(the garbage man’s time, the money you pay for the removal, etc). It is
truly a travesty.
All this garbage that people
are trying to get rid of can be a better supplement for your garden
than any fertilizer or chemical. If you properly facilitate the
decomposition of all of the garbage, it will alter chemically until it
is in such a state that it can be nothing but beneficial nutrition for
other plants. Therefore you can turn all the stuff you would have
thrown away into top grade fertilizer for your garden.
Usually compost is maintained in a pile
somewhere in your backyard. Usually the thought of a compost heap
brings disturbing images to ones mind; heaps of rotten garbage emitting
a horrid odor. However, if you maintain it correctly you’ll be able to
produce great compost without producing an offensive odor. When I first
began my compost pile in an
effort to improve environmental health, I made several major errors.
These included preventing the pile from the oxygen it truly needed, and
keeping it to dry. It ended up decomposing in a very non-beneficial
way, and producing an odor so foul that I had government agents
knocking at my door.
When you are choosing your spot
where you will be putting all of these materials, you should aim for a
higher square footage. Having a really deep pile of compost is not a
good idea, because generally the deeper sections won’t be exposed to
anything that is required for the process to work. It is better to
spread it all out over a large area. If you have a shed or a tool shack
of some sort, it is a possibility to spread it over the roof (with
boards to keep it from falling off, of course). I have seen this done
several times, and it helps keep the pile out of the way while still
maintaining a large square footage.
A compost heap can consist of any
organic garbage from your yard, garden or kitchen. This includes
leaves, grass, any leftover food that won’t be eaten, or newspaper (no
more than a fifth of your pile should consist of newspaper, due to it
having a harder time composting with the rest of the materials).
Usually if you have a barrel devoted to storing all of these things, it
will fill up within several weeks. It is quite easy to obtain compost,
but the hard part truly comes in getting it to compost.
After you have begun to get a
large assortment of materials in your compost heap, you should moisten
the whole pile. This encourages the process of composting. Also chop
every element of the pile into the smallest pieces possible. As the
materials start to compress and meld together as they decompose,
frequently head outside and aerate the pile. You can use a shovel to
mix it all up, or an aeration tool to poke dozens of tiny holes into
it. Doing this will increase the oxygen flow to each part of the pile,
and oxygen is required for any decomposition to take place.
If maintaining a compost pile
sounds like something that would interest you, start considering the
different placement options. The hardest part about maintaining a pile
is choosing a spot that provides enough square footage without
intruding on the rest of your yard or garden. While usually you can
prevent the horrible odors that most people associate with compost
heaps, it’s still not a pleasant thing to have to look at whenever you
go for a walk in your garden.
